There are over a half a million Displaced Homemakers between the ages of 21 and 70 in New Jersey. Six out of ten live below the poverty line; however, during their marriage most Displaced Homemakers were considered “middle class.”
The average Displaced Homemaker has 2.5 dependents.
The Division on Women funds 15 Displaced Homemaker programs;
seven counties do not have programs.
The FY08 Governor’s State budget to support all Displaced Homemaker programs is $1,250,000.
Service providers help almost 4,000 women each year;
at a cost of approximately $802 per client for all services rendered.
645 clients entered GED, ESL, vocational school, college or other educational/training programs
as a result of accessing services through their Displaced Homemaker programs.
Over 3,000 hours of workshops were presented by Displaced Homemaker programs.
More than 3,000 clients per year complete a structured career/job readiness program and
computer training provided by the Displaced Homemaker programs.
Program personnel provide approximately 15,000 hours of career and educational counseling.
These include intake, one-to-one and group counseling and follow-up support to clients.
Program personnel assisted 702 displaced homemaker women secure gainful employment.
The mission of the Displaced Homemakers Network of New Jersey, Inc.,
a nonprofit, nonpartisan coalition, is to advocate for the needs of the Displaced Homemakers
Centers and the women they serve.
